New York , New York I Love You - Final Major Project - Evaluation
For my final major project i focused on New York as it is my dream place to visit in the whole intire world and finally got to New York this year with college on the annual trip. That trigured inspiration and idea for a final piece and research to coinside great together so taking all my memories and photo's and a New York Times i had the start of my project and the idea was relisied. I wanted a creative and a very New York way to remember my trip so i wanted to create my own news paper like the New York Times so my research could act as my articles and inspire my NYC screen prints that would feauture in it , to make mine different and personal my news paper is called the Vaines Voice and is made from different fabrics and techniques and had a variety of USA themed colours that help make my NYC screen print pop of the page like a big news story.
My intention for my Final piece was at first to help relive a dream of my bucket list and also make anybody who views it think wow i feel like i was there. Even though i brought back photo's of my experiences only i can say i was actually say i was there and want the greatest city on earth to be shared with others like a newspaper shares stories and photo's. To help my final piece look like the real mcCoy i created a layout of the front cover simular to the New York Times by having a headline and Title and article , the headline is called "One Girl , One NYC Adventure A Trip Of A Lifetime". I wrote the article my self i wanted it to be from a 1st person perspective so i reported on my personal experiences.
To collect primary research i choose to take photo's of the most iconic places in New York such as the Statue of liberty , chrystler building , Empire state building , Times square and many more from my walks on the NYC and going to see the tourist attaractions. My secondary research was on Artist and fashion designers that use both newspaper and New york as the inspiration and in there work. To represent the newspaper aspect i choose John Galliano for Dior who designed the 2001 spring summer newspaper print dress which is simular to my final piece as the fabric in my case is designed in the shape of the Newspaper , thats how Galliano inspiried my final piece. To represent the pop art aspect i choose Roy Lichenstien and his famous I love freedom statue of liberty piece that coundn't be more suited to my New york brief , to continue the pop art route i choose Jeff Koons an New York based sculpturist who work can be seen around newyork i wanted to research home grown talent. As my style of work is sketchy i wanted to use a detailed style artist to contrast so i chose Chris Dents who's work is mainly skylines and landmarks and does alot of New York his work only includes black and white and the black helps shows off the clean lines and detailis in the buildings thats what inspired my screen to be simple. My Screen in the end was a mixture of Roy Lichenstein and Chris Dents , i kept it simiple and created a layout of a cartoon statue of liberty and pop art style Brooklyn Bridge and chrystler building and the i conic I <3 NY turned into a dainty apple.
In this project i used 2 screens in a A3 size the first one was a skyline silhouette and the main screen i used the most is the lady liberty and the chrystler building and the brooklyn bridge and i heart NY.
My samples and final piece i used a mixtures of techniques such a batik , Devore and procion and pigment dye also puffbinder and colour puffbinder. Fabric has really made my project a textiles final piece , i used cotton , muslin , Devore azeta and velvet , Satin and i stuffed my front and back cover of my newspaper which is my article with wadding to give a more 3D effect. To create my pages i sewn my samples face to face on the edge on a sewing machine then once i have done that i turn inside out to show each side has a differnent sample and page to turn.
I had a specific colour palette for this project i wanted to a american stars and stripes colours so blue and red was a main colour but to add contrast i added yellow and orange to create a gold effect to emulate the stars that proudly are on the american flag. to add a more NYC feel i added green as New York is the big apple. so i stuck to 5 colours to match my theme. All my samples ansd final pieces follow suit my colour palette carrys on though out in my sketch book and sheet work.
My sketchbook has no particular order but i started my doing a page of texts used in american newspapers and then i went on roll of doing each page in order i went to see each spot in New York and used the photo's of me at the attractions and added my ticket from the trip that are also my primary research. With my remaining photos im going to create a page by page photo gallery with Frames highlighting the photo's of what people regonize as NY and add more Artist research and patterns out of the main part of New York.
My sheet work if anybody see's it can see that its definatly all about New York , my sheets are a development of the same things going to forms and sizes.
I am very happy with the progress i have made in this project and my final outcome.
Emily, I highly recommend you go back through this and spell check it.
