FMP - 1st Draft Proposal

FMP Proposal-Emily Vaines

For my final major project I’m going down a special experience route as I am going to New York with college it my one place I’ve always wanted to go so I’m using New York a driving force for my FMP. To really make the most and get the most research and information on New York, for my primary research I am going to take photos of all the famous landmarks that will influence and be on my screen prints and bring back newspapers to keep track on the American culture and news as part of my research into America. My research and sketchbook will reflect my journey in New York and my experiences and will take on a Journal / Newspaper quality with a personal feel to it so the person looking at my work will feel like they was there too. Alongside my journal feel sketch book I will also write a journal while I’m there and also blog about my days and Art sculptures and the people traffic and transport that covers New York  so I’m not missing a beat and have a constant record of my inspiration and Primary research.

My Idea & final piece will consist of 3 things it will be a Newspaper called The Vaines Voice in a layout of a newspaper with each page being a mixture of materials and screen prints inspired by my primary research; I want to explore the main iconic attractions/landmarks that New York is famous for and the surrounding neighbourhoods other than the Island of Manhattan. This Newspaper that I will sew together with all my A3 samples creating a book/newspaper will have screens of imagery of the Chrysler building , Empire State , Statue of Liberty , NYC taxi , Brooklyn Bridge , Time Square , streets of New York and skyline of New York and surrounding neighbourhoods such as Brooklyn , Williamsburg , Chelsea , Tribeca. As an extra I want to do a collection of New York themed accessories as New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world I want to do my version fashion goods. My accessories are going to be a printed scarves in a range of pocket scarves and longer scarves using Devore and silks also experiment with making jewellery using leather and chains and other fabrics using both heat transfers and screen printing.

Artist inspiration I am taking inspiration from many different roots and art movements I am trying to be as diverse as possible using both fashion designers and artists. The first artist I’m looking at is Roy Lichtenstein with his pop art movement and Jeff Koons for his contempory sculptures in New York also with using Architecture as a constant theme I have researched architects who designed the landmarks so I look into Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, Richard Moss Hunt, and William Van Alen. For fashion I am looking at John Galliano for Dior Newspaper Dress.

Paper samples

Cotton samples

I dyed my samples using the same colours as before and using the same techniques.
I used all 3 screens on my samples using a mixture of colours mainly black , blue , brown and grey which where done in pigment.

Silk samples

Silk Viscose was my favourite fabric as i loved how it made it look so luxurious and with procion dye the colours just popped.
I died all my fabric a different colour using a range of colours for example procion black plus water , black and orange Mx2R , red Mx5B and green Mx2B. As with all dyed fabrics you have to heat press then wash before screening.
I used a mixture of all 3 screens or just the one.

Muslin sample's

For my Muslin sample's as its a thin fabric i knew i couldn't use it as a bag lining but i wanted to experiment.
For the first one i died with procion and mix red MX5B orange MX2R and black with water to create a tie dye look , After that i then. Heat pressed and washed.
When that was
Complete i heat transferred my
Image of my final design on to it so i
Could try all techniques.
My second was died using same die and technique but this time i applied puff binder using all 3 screens, theses was coloured so i added pigment to the puffbinder to create the colour. To do puffbinder i pulled the solution over the fabric and then applied a heat gun to make it rise.

Devore samples

I did 2 Devore sample's one using A4 Devore Silk and one in A3 using the same material.
The colour scheme's i used was cream and salmon pink.
The A4 sample was done by using my outline screen , using the Devore solution with a squeegee i pulled the solution down the screen. I then lifted the fabric and then taped it up and left it to dry once that was done i washed it so the fabric would wash away i then died it with procion a mixture of red Mx5B and water and a bit of Orange Mx2R. Once that was done i heat pressed and washed it and left to dry then ironed and the sample was complete.
For the A3 sample i did the same but i repeated the print .

Leather Samples

For the samples for the bag lining are A4 and i wanted to experiment with my fabric's so after my talks with Moo , i mentioned i was going to find some leather to use to see if it would work and they mentioned i could use their leather from the shop.
I went to the shop to collect the leather and with advice from my tutors i tried it using a black pigment print on both sides of the leather the leather and the suede on the other side.
It turned out really well i used the 3rd screen of the outline of everything.

Sketch book and my research

Other than researching moo and there garments and products and the design cycle in my sketch book i also for my artist Research and Art movement found a number of artist/designer.
Louis Vuitton and the many collaborations with Marc Jacob's the head designer of LV. Starting with Stephen Spouse , Takashi Murakami , Yayoi Kusama and Louis Vuitton and there infamous Monogram updated.
Also i researched Gucci , Fendi , Dnky ,Michael Kors and Vivienne Westwood.
For my artist movement i choose to research Holly Fulton for her amazing Aztec Garments.

Codatrace Screen's

For our sample's we had to do our screens on codatrace paper using codatrace paste that has to have the right consistency with the right amount of water in it so it doesn't peel off.
Each layer represent's a different screen so instead of one screen with one colour i have 3 layer with options for different colours.
I painted the formula on to the special paper with each layer been a different colour.

Design Cycle

After all my sheet work was done i had the idea set in my head as in what i wanted to do with my design , i continued on from my visual sheet to create my design.
When i created my final design i did change it slightly as the A3 design on my
Visual sheet to A4 for my sample's i also made the cow have 2 heads that was opposite each other to create a 360 degrees versatile fabric this also happened to my heart necklaces and text was rotated so that it can relate for a more versatile usable fabric. Also added cow print so it was more like Moo.

Visual Sheets

After my research though my mood board and primary research i have had a light bulb moment where i wanted to go with the bag lining design.
After talks with our client taking into the fact they wanted the logo to be involved in the design (the cow and lettering) i made the cow the centre of the design. To
Make this design more me instead of copying moo i added female characteristics like eyelashes , eyebrows and a beauty spot and to really relate the client to the brand moo earrings from the peppercorn line.
To add further moo product based design i mixed the aztec print they use with the heart necklaces in 2 forms to integrate the designs of me and my versions , to create the flow of the design i added the chains and roses.
The second visual sheet was mainly concentrating on the aztec print i played around with different aspects of the print and tried different sizes and placements and colour.

Mood Board

After visiting Moo with my collected photo's that could help influence my design. On my sheet i have the cow logo , real leather sign , Moo boots , Aztec top and the Peppercorn necklace that ended up in my design and the mixtures of chains .

Customer Board

To get a better idea of who i was working with (Moo) i decided to create a customer within the ages of 18-60 that the Moo style fits.
My customer was 21 years old girl who is a university student who studies to be a nurse at Sheffield Hallam , who lives at home with her parents while saves for to get her own first home. For transport she is driving a chic hatchback the Fiat 500. She is the sort of girl who saves for those important unique pieces such as Moo.

Primary Research - My Trip To The Moo Store

To collect primary research i went down to Moo to collect images and find out my inspiration for my design , also find what there colour scheme they work with and there design style.
I took photo's of shop , logo , Garments and accessories so i could cover all basis of research to create my designs .
