2nd Day Of Observational Drawing

With the same Set up as monday are first day of Observational drawing we was told by our tutor that todays materials we was using was wet media such as watercolours and drawing inks.
First we had to stretch some paper i choose to work onto 2 A4 pieces of white paper. To stretch the paper i first with a sponge i wet the pieces of paper that laid in position on board , the next step was to cut 5 pieces gum strip tape measured to perfect size once that was done i wet the shiny side and laid the tape over the gaps of the paper so that it would stretch it then you leave to dry.
Once the paper had been stretches and dried i started observational drawing i choose to draw a beautiful yellow with orange tints lily sort of flower. I then sat round the set at place with the best view of the flower and began to draw a line drawing of the flower, after i had done that i then poured some green drawing ink into a cup then with a paint brush and painted onto the line drawing. After the green i began adding the yellow and orange to the flowers using watercolour paint so each object is highlighted using accurate colours. I began to continue to use natural shades so used a dark brown to outline the flowers and leafs to add shading to complete the observational drawing i used a watered down yellow watercolour to add as surrounding background.
My final drawing wet media piece was on the flowers again i began with doing a 2b pencil for a shaded and cross hatched drawing , after i had completed the observational drawing i began to add shadowing with the watercoloring brown then to highlight the flower by adding a pop of yellow.
Also that day i began work on the line drawing with part shading of the cream circular designed ball with the spiral cabbage and the bright leaves.

Trip and inspiration

On my trip to Loch Park other than taking pictures of the trees during the season and array of colours of the leafs that have fallen i saw a more
Artistic shot. On the side of the entrance there was some wall art ( Graffiti) it has the nature theme and it is a form art its the perfect primary research , it a true reflection of both spring and summer showing brightness before the hibernation of the flower in the winter.
After that inspirational shot in the park i went to a flower shop and saw these vibrant flowers that epitomised the wall art sam type of flowers and colour.

New Brief - Nature

Today i started work on the new Brief which is called Nature the basis is to concentrate on natural forms such as flowers , trees to Pebbles.
Today we started with observational drawing with a set that my Tutor set up ,for us using the objects the class and i
Brought in for the week long observational drawing exercise.
To start the session off that day we was given an allotted time of 3 hours to travel anyway that has nature as surroundings and take photo's for our primary research. My plan for the allotted time was to stay local to really get the most value from it, so i took myself to Loch Park and went to scenic route there. On that route there was the fall of the autumn leaves and trees with the summer flowers vibrant in colour but ready for the seasons change which compliments the body of photos i took.
When i returned to class me and the class started our observational drawings , to start the session we choose one part of the set and create just a line drawing with no shading.
The Guidelines for the drawing session were as followed no colour just the use of pencils and graphite pencils and chalk when used on the black paper.
As you can see the first image is the first observational drawing i
Chose to work on the Pineapple and the rose , i liked the different shapes as i thought the line work and shapes would marry well together i used an 3B pencil for the first image.
To add more techniques i decided to draw the same objects this time with a 8B Graphite pencil this time adding shading and cross hatching with rendering to add light and dark nature imagery.
My final image i completed that day was on a different subject this time a white circular patterned ball surrounded by a purple cabbage. For the best possible result i used the white chalk on A4 black paper and began to draw the ball and the cabbage.

Evaluation- Emily Vaines

"Too Much Information Project"
This project started when we broke from college this summer but before we left for summer break where we would be working on the project and when we came back Kat our Tutor delivered the brief to us in detail. This included what expected of us and what we need to provide in this project to get each grade the most important thing we was told was how broad of a subject Information is and which area we could look into although there was no real limit on inspiration resources as information is everywhere from food labels to the alphabet.
The Guidelines were as followed we had to do the Brief in a Sketchbook and we had to fill book with both textural work (3D based) also 2D , One of the rules i tryed my best to keep is to keep my pages relevant to the brief and to have Artist Research with artists that relate to the pages such as Andy Warhol.
My initial ideas for the project was cinema tickets and page full of things related to the film so i had a batman page with the actual cinema ticket which was the Secondary Research part of the page then i did my primary research by recreating the batman logo.
Throughout my sketch book i did pages on Andy Warhol and his Campbell's soup which related to my food labels pages , my inspiration throughout the brief was to base it on the things i got up to and trips i took and the information i brought back so for example tickets and leaflets and concert tickets and drawing of the musician guitar picks and album covers. My summer was quite music inspired as i went in that direction for 2 pages of my sketch book including a page dedicated my favourite artists and there new album and  the lyrics of the songs that page was then inspired textural by love and red as that was the musician theme it was now mine.
Further inspiration was signs and road signs i had gone out and took photos of near by road signs near me that was part of my primary research to add a layered less 2 dimensional look i worked with tissue paper and drew the outline over with fine liners and added 4 layer fabric weaved based American junction sign and 3D springed hazard signs. Global inspiration was key on one of my pages which i made into a sample i mixed transport and landmarks that insulate New York USA  so i found a Roy Lichtenstein Statue of Liberty piece and i recreated that and framed the pictures with ribbon , to connect the transatlantic country i have researched an Artist called Barry Goodman who works with number plates on taxis which connects both London and America together. Along the Transport route i used train tickets as a background and drew a stagecoach bus with all the detail including number plates which is like Barry Goodman Work. Though out the project i took pictures of roads signs and my trip to Alton towers and our trip to Scarborough when we came back from after summer.
Different aspects of this project like Time management i would of changed during my time at home i didn't create the best work that could off i was lacking the creative atmosphere that i have in college that effected me and the quality and quantity of work over my 7 week on the project i produced 10+ pages. when i came back to college to work further on our project i missed a week of the second half of the brief leaving me stressed out in times, in aspects like visual sheets and tracings to be made for screens i had 2 days to do 2 A3 visual sheets and A3 Tracing which did lead to my tracing not having the best line control i could of had which i have talked to Kat my tutor about and we noted in my tutorial sessions. Overall i handed all my final piece , tech file in and free hand Embroidery work in on time and at high standard.
Inspiration from artist / designers in this project well the most predominate was Andy Warhol his pop art and colour full work almost making real life seem like a cartoon i like that , his inspiration went passed art in into fashion as i found his campbell soup piece found as a repeat pattern dress on a on line Art website called Etsy. On the pop art Theme Roy lichenstein was a great inspirations with the USA page which made an appearance on my tracing with the Statue of liberty his use of colours him and Warhol impacted my dyed sample from my tech file. Fashion was a big inspiration and i found a great artist Joan Schultze who uses silhouettes which are fashion based with these amazing information themed backgrounds.
My Repeat Tracing was mainly idea's from the visual sheets which was took from my sketchbook which was then expanded into more detail and then worked the best layout for the tracing. My sheet work development was layout based and how the continued line that when connects makes a jigsaw effect then into a repeat pattern which was the final piece.
Sewing Machines was a brand new thing for me Ive never touched one before I'm not going to lie it was a shock and did take a couple of days getting the hang of the machine before i could use it confidently without constant help i know how to use all the items on them and there purpose on different machines.
In the workshop/print room Ive haven't done anything in there much before so i was basically starting at stage 1 i experienced techniques such as Devore , Puff Binder , Colour Puff Binder , Pigment and Procion Dye and even Tie Dye and Batik and most importantly working with a screen and taking care of it and the cleaning process. I worked with  a lot of fabric from cotton , heavy silk , Devore silk , velvet and azeta and truly enjoyed the most the dyeing of the fabric that went really well for me i felt i excelled in that and the puffbinder which i work really well with and did quite alot of work with. the things that didn't go as well i would of hope for was the sewing but hopefully i will get better in time but overall I'm really happy how i handled the project and how it turned out.

Final Piece

On A3 cotton i began to dye my fabric using Procion Dye the same as my A4 sample.
When this was dried i heat pressed this at 180•c for 18 seconds to lock my dye in on the fabric. Once they have dried go straight to the sink and wash the cotton till all excess colour runs out .
Now that its dry i mixed my coloured pigment dye with the puffbinder, i chose to use green with the mixture just right i brought it over next to my screen with the dyed cotton underneath. I began to place the pigment puffbinder at the top if the screen and with the squeegee with pressure on the screen i pulled the paste up and down twice. To complete the repeat pattern i lined the screen again to were the continued line laid and repeated the process.
Next step was taking the final piece over to the heat gun and hovering over to the binder puffed up , once that was done i went over to the Batik(wax) table i began adding the wax to the outlines of my print. To create the resist i applied a green ink wash over so the resist was complete.

Free Hand Stitching On A Sewing Machine

This was a hard task for having only having a day on the sewing machine before hand but with the Kats help i got though it.
To Free hand Stitch basically means draw on fabric ,which this time was organza which Had been bonded though the fibres with Bondaweb placed on and ironed without a footer on the machine and set to straight stitch.
To hold the the organza in place safely for free hand stitching you place it in a wooden hoop.
To continue my sewing earlier in the week i had my initiation on the machines doing each stitch they could on a sheet of calico fabric , i did this on 2 machines.

Tie Dye Sample

This was my first attempt at Tie Dye so i tried first with a simpler Fabric so i choose A4 Cotton.
To start the process i placed a marble in the middle of the fabric then with a rubber band i wrap that under the marble , this process continued by wrapping 3 more Bands round this completed the preparation.
The fabric dye used was Procion i began dipping the marble end of the fabric in the dye in used the colours pink and blue to complete the job i worked my way down the fabric until the whole thing was died.
If i look back on it now i would choose brighter colours so they would of stood out .
Once i my material has dried i untied the bands and took out the marble , i then proceeded to heat press at temperature of 180 for 20 seconds to lock in the colour. Once the colour had been locked in i took my Tie Dye sample to the sink where i washed the fabric for the final step and left to dry.

Devore

This was the technique that had more of complicated process. The samples were done 3 different A4 fabrics that are the best for the Devore technique Azeta , Velvet and Silk.
Once the material is masked taped down i placed the mesh screen with my tracing on over the material doing each one separately. Before the prep work you have to make sure that surface you are working on is clean so the screen comes out clean.
Then you apply the Devore Paste which is clear cream colour which was mixed by our Technician Katharine, like with a screen print get a squeegee and pull the paste up and down twice then lift the screen up and untape the material and hang to dry for 5-10 minutes.
Once the material has dried place it under the heat press at a temperature of 180 degrees for 18 seconds to fix the penetrate the fibres. Wash the fabric so the pattern from the screen washes away with a rubbing action then after that place to dry. With the velvet fabric i left it pure to give the fresh organic look. On the other hand with the Azeta and the silk once i had let it dry naturally and heat pressed then washed while it was still wet i applied the Procion dye in several colours onto both fabrics. I let them dry till its bone dry then i heat pressed and washed again then when it was dry they was complete they were my trio of Devore Samples.

Puff Binder

Next sample was Puffbinder
I took my A4 sized piece of Muslin (which is thin like mesh)
I then took the Puff Binder which is a creamy coloured paste, applied 5 almond sized drops on the top of the screen. After the application i dipped my squeegee into the PuffBinder and pulled down and up twice applying pressure then the muslin puff binder was completed. Straight after that was done i used the heat gun which you hover over the cotton this sparks the puff binder to rise creating a brighter raised up screen print.
Further into my experimentation i decided to work with colour puff binder , i went with pink 5BTL pigment dye that gets added in small doses into the puff binder when mixed creates the pink colour that matches the pink i used in my visual sheets. Following the same technique this time on A4 cotton the end product the exact desired effect i wanted. To complete the screen print i hovered the heat gun over the cotton not too close that it burns , but enough till all the puff binder has risen this is then the finished result.
After my success with the other 2 i decided to produce an 4 in 1 sample i started on the A4 piece of cotton dyeing the material. The dye used on the cotton was Procion i used 5 colours Blue, yellow and red which are in the primary colours also green and orange which are secondary. After this had dried i heat pressed it at a 180•c for 18 seconds to lock the colour in to the fabric after that re wash again and leave to dry. When the fabric has dried then place the screen over the fabric ,and with the pigment/Puffbinder mixture pull up and down twice for a thicker coverage on the fabric. Following the sequence i then hovered the heat gun over it till the binder has risen the final 2 steps are batik (wax) with that i applied a layer of Procion over to create the resist.

Pigment Print

The containers with colour inside them in the front of the picture is the pigment dye which we use to screen print on fabrics such as cotton and also paper.
The difference between Pigment and procion dye is the consistency Pigment has a thick consistency and the Procion is a thinner liquid consistency .
With Procion dye which in the back of the picture its mainly more of a fabric dye used on techniques such as , Devore after you have washed the fabric and the pattern has fell away you can take a paint brush and start making dye background with the Procion.
